Simple steps for before sleep skincare

With skincare coming to the forefront of self care and so many products being released on a daily basis, it's easy to get overwhelmed. It's important to do your research and understand what you're buying because you'll be putting it on your body's largest organ. There is a difference in the type of skincare you should be using - not only during different seasons - but also during different times of day.

Understand Your Skin

It's important to understand whether you have dry, oily or combination skin. Buying the wrong products can cause more harm than good - to both your skin and your wallet.

Skincare that you use in the morning, under your makeup and to go out in the sun, shouldn't be the same as what you're putting on your skin before sleep. During your sleep is the optimal time to re-hydrate your skin and repair damage.

Ingredients To Look For

There are some ingredients you should use at night because they don't mix well with makeup and some that should be used because they can cause redness and slight irritation and you don't want that going on while you're out and about.

Peels and microderm scrubs should be done in the evening so your skin has time to adjust to the slight irritation before it's exposed to the sunlight.

PEELS

Look for: Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid , Quinoa Husk Extract, Amazonian White Clay, Retinol

SCRUBS

Look for: Papaya/Pineapple/Pumpkin Enzymes, Rosewood and Cinnamon Extracts, Willow Bark and Meadowsweet

Serums, Lotions & Masks

The order does matter

The jury has decided that you apply skincare in the order of thickness. Although there are exceptions to this rule involving active ingredients - you should apply your skincare routine from most fluid to thickest (typically toner to serum to moisturizer).

OK, So Here's The Thing

Skincare is extremely important and everyone should be doing it twice a day, everyday. HOWEVER, does anyone really wash their face and apply all of these steps every. single. day? I sure don't. I would say during a good week when I'm really on my game, I do my morning skincare routine 6/7 days and my nighttime routine 4/7 days. I wash my face almost every single night but sometimes I'm just too dang tired to do the rest of the steps so I just slather my face in a good face oil and head-to-pillow (silk pillowcases are a skincare must people!) My theory is that if you're putting in the time to take care of yourself, you also have to give yourself a freaking break every once in a while. So you've had too much wine and you don't even want to wash your face? Use a makeup wipe and go to sleep. Just don't make it a regular thing.

Also, keep in mind that a regular skincare routine requires you to keep your products on hand. So remember to search for products within a monthly budget that you'll be able to continue to buy. They are out there, promise. Some of my favorite products were found at Farmer's Markets and on Etsy.

Here is a list of my favorite nighttime skincare products in the order I use them:

*As everyone's skin is different and reacts differently, I strongly advise that you consult with a dermatologist prior to making any major changes in your skincare routine.
