I tend to sleep better in the winter, is that a thing? Even still, I never really sleep great. I'm so jealous of people that can just lay down somewhere and pass out. My mind races, I can't get comfortable, I think of things I need to do... it's a whole process to get myself situated to actually fall asleep and then something wakes me up and it starts alllll over again.
Over the years I've come across some things that have definitely helped me get to sleep [ and stay asleep ] a little easier.
1. Get off your freaking phone. At least an hour before you plan to go to sleep but preferably longer. We recently decided to put our phones away after dinner so we actually talk to and pay attention to one another.
2. Mind dump. Write down or just think about all the things that are on your mind, and then quickly let them go. Either scribble them down or toss them mentally aside as you go through them, taking note that there is nothing you can do about them right now and worrying about them isn't going to solve anything.
3. Don't watch TV ( HA ) ...but if you do, watch something that isn't upsetting. We were watching Blacklist before bed for a while and Jay and I were both having these crazy dreams and interrupted sleep. Try the Food Network, never disappoints.
4. Have sex. No, really...
5. Have a ritual. Mine: after dinner I change into pajamas, wash my face and do my skincare & brush my teeth (my attempt to prevent snacking). Before bed I get a glass of water, put on a lip mask and body lotion and sometimes diffuse lavender.
